SUMMARY:Voices of the Violin in Leiden
DESCRIPTION:It is a process that every musician has to deal with at least once in his or her career: the search for a new instrument. Violinist Joseph Puglia had to search for a “new” instrument in 2021\, in the midst of the crown crisis. He tried more than 80 violins\, each with its own character and sound world. Coronavirus-related restrictions made it difficult to play together with other musicians\, and this inspired him to delve into solo violin repertoire: only 1 solo violin. Puglia\, who as a concert violinist is very familiar with contemporary repertoire\, had various composers compose music specifically for this project. Together with the composers\, he pushed the limits of his violin technique and experimented with the variety of sounds a violin can produce. The result of these experiments: playing a violin with Chinese sticks or holding the violin on his knees. \nCasual or not\, Puglia’s search for a new instrument led to a colorful collection of new works for solo violin\, which he performs along with Bach’s masterful Second Partita under the title Voices of a Violin . During this concert\, Puglia will appropriately play his ‘new’ violin: an Italian instrument built by Anselmo Bellosio in 1773. \nProgramma & Musici\n\no.a. Bach Partita no.2 in d BWV 1004  |  Padding 26 Seconds  |  Borzelli presto continuo  |  Moore E is for Elijah  |  de Raaff Encore II  |  Malossi Bottignole Hummingbird Pulse  |  Chrem Comfort\, for Joe  \nUitvoerenden: Joseph Puglia  viool \n\n  \nJoseph Puglia\nAmerican violinist Joseph Puglia studied at the Juilliard School of Music in New York and the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. In 2009 he made his solo debut in the main hall of the Concertgebouw\, where he performed John Adams’ Violin Concerto with Asko|Schönberg conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw. Puglia gives concerts at home and abroad and can be regularly heard as first violinist with Asko|Schönberg \, the Ensemble Intercontemporain and the Netherlands Chamber Orchestra. \nJoseph Puglia – Voices of the Violin

SUMMARY:Happy Ending - Opera Risciò
SUMMARY:11\,000 Saiten – Holland Festival
DESCRIPTION:Fifty pianos in a large circle in the Gashouder in Amsterdam. They form the starting point for an overwhelming composition\, sometimes of ethereal beauty and at other times swelling menacingly to a thundering roar. \n11\,000 Saiten\, “11\,000 Strings\,” is the name of this new outsized composition by grandmaster Georg Friedrich Haas. Klangforum Wien asked him to compose a piece for the ensemble and fifty pianos. The idea for this project came about when\, during a visit to a Chinese piano factory\, ensemble-intendant Peter Paul Kainrath was blown off his socks by the sound of dozens of pianos that\, to test them\, were played simultaneously\, mechanically. Haas responded enthusiastically to the request and developed the idea into an impressive\, emotional listening journey\, like music to an invisible film. \nIn 11\,000 Saiten\, each of the fifty pianos is tuned pure on its own\, but in relation to each other they are ‘tuned’ in very small steps: each piano sounds 1/50 of a semitone higher. This creates a surround ‘piano orchestra’ that\, especially in combination with the phenomenal instrumentalists of Klangforum\, offers an immense palette of sound: from pure piano sound and timbres\, which you would swear come from a synthesizer\, to pure noise and penetrating thunder. Add to that the art of Haas\, who never forgets the human touch in his experimentation\, plus the monumental atmosphere of the gasholder: good for an unforgettable experience. \n‘This really is such a crazy idea that there is no option but to say “Yes!”‘\n– Georg Friedrich Haas

SUMMARY:Dream of the Siren at WORM\, Rotterdam (NL)
DESCRIPTION:Dream of the Siren is a research project exploring applications of artificial intelligence programs in contemporary music. This project aims to exploit the “failures” of currently available AI technology\, such as uncanny voice clonings\, highly random text suggestions\, repetitive musical structures\, and illogical musical transitions. The project seeks to find a path to artistically fulfilling co-existence with the threat of AI. Both composers explore this concept within the archetype of the siren—the shapeshifting\, grotesque mirror of humanity’s dreams. \nNiko Schroeder researches a new AI-assisted piece created with text structures based on the dreams of humanity. Livia Malossi researches the utopian labour dynamics of AI voice cloning and electronic media generation with AI chess programs. Vanessa Guinadi is the co-researcher and producer of the project. This project is also supported by the Stichting de Zaaier Research Grant. \nEnsemble EchoLab:\nVanessa Guinadi\, soprano\nKristia Michael\, soprano\nJasperina Verheij\, mezzosoprano  \n

The exhibition and its parallel projects result from curatorial research and public outreach conducted by her and her team—including curators Rosa de Graaf\, Jessy Koeiman\, Julija Mockutė\, and Vivian Ziherl—during this span of time.

SUMMARY:Luoghi terrestri\, Luoghi celesti - Elide Sulsenti live at JazzClub Ferrara
DESCRIPTION:Luoghi terrestri\, Luoghi celesti\nLuciano Berio – Sequenza XIV (2002)\nGioia Gurioli – Couloir du Noir (2018)\nKrzysztof Penderecki – Capriccio per Siegfried Palm (1968)\nLivia Malossi – Places (2021)\nKaija Saariaho – Sept Papillons (2000)\nDurata totale circa 50’\n[Serico-Tonale] A cura di Istantanea Aps.
