SUMMARY:11\,000 Saiten – Holland Festival
DESCRIPTION:Fifty pianos in a large circle in the Gashouder in Amsterdam. They form the starting point for an overwhelming composition\, sometimes of ethereal beauty and at other times swelling menacingly to a thundering roar. \n11\,000 Saiten\, “11\,000 Strings\,” is the name of this new outsized composition by grandmaster Georg Friedrich Haas. Klangforum Wien asked him to compose a piece for the ensemble and fifty pianos. The idea for this project came about when\, during a visit to a Chinese piano factory\, ensemble-intendant Peter Paul Kainrath was blown off his socks by the sound of dozens of pianos that\, to test them\, were played simultaneously\, mechanically. Haas responded enthusiastically to the request and developed the idea into an impressive\, emotional listening journey\, like music to an invisible film. \nIn 11\,000 Saiten\, each of the fifty pianos is tuned pure on its own\, but in relation to each other they are ‘tuned’ in very small steps: each piano sounds 1/50 of a semitone higher. This creates a surround ‘piano orchestra’ that\, especially in combination with the phenomenal instrumentalists of Klangforum\, offers an immense palette of sound: from pure piano sound and timbres\, which you would swear come from a synthesizer\, to pure noise and penetrating thunder. Add to that the art of Haas\, who never forgets the human touch in his experimentation\, plus the monumental atmosphere of the gasholder: good for an unforgettable experience. \n‘This really is such a crazy idea that there is no option but to say “Yes!”‘\n– Georg Friedrich Haas

SUMMARY:Dream of the Siren at WORM\, Rotterdam (NL)
DESCRIPTION:Dream of the Siren is a research project exploring applications of artificial intelligence programs in contemporary music. This project aims to exploit the “failures” of currently available AI technology\, such as uncanny voice clonings\, highly random text suggestions\, repetitive musical structures\, and illogical musical transitions. The project seeks to find a path to artistically fulfilling co-existence with the threat of AI. Both composers explore this concept within the archetype of the siren—the shapeshifting\, grotesque mirror of humanity’s dreams. \nNiko Schroeder researches a new AI-assisted piece created with text structures based on the dreams of humanity. Livia Malossi researches the utopian labour dynamics of AI voice cloning and electronic media generation with AI chess programs. Vanessa Guinadi is the co-researcher and producer of the project. This project is also supported by the Stichting de Zaaier Research Grant. \nEnsemble EchoLab:\nVanessa Guinadi\, soprano\nKristia Michael\, soprano\nJasperina Verheij\, mezzosoprano  \n

SUMMARY:Play! Final Performance
DESCRIPTION:Play – breaking the boundaries between listening and performing\nFeaturing Joe Puglia\, Cristiano Viviani\, students of the Koninklijk Conservatorium and audience.\n\n\n\n\n\nThis laboratory investigates the way audience and performers collaborate to produce musical meanings. \n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe group will explore music across genres and through history\, from Bach to the present day\, work on listening meditations\, and reflect on our collective musical experiences. Musicians from the Royal Conservatory will perform\, and audience members will be invited to explore music written for non-musicians. \nWe invite everyone to reflect on our collective ownership of sound\, and what makes a concert worthwhile. The last session will be a performance\, inspired by explorations together. \nThe pieces “Hummingbird Pulse” for violin solo will be played by Joe Puglia\, and the piece “let DancingDots = [dance ]” will be premiered by the ensemble of the participant to the workshop.

SUMMARY:Voices of the Violin - Santpoort
DESCRIPTION:Joseph Puglia is gonna play his “Voices of the Violin” once more\, at ‘T Mosterdzaadje in Santpoort-Noord\, The Netherlands. \nFrom Joe’s website\, about the concert: \n“Voices of the Violin” is a cycle of new solo pieces. Rather than showing the personality of the performer\nor composer\, these works aim to show how the personality of a violin shapes the way we experience\nmusic – to show what the instrument has to say for itself.\nThe project grew out of my own search for a violin. In 2021\, I had to look for a new instrument. I tried\nover 80 different violins\, each with a unique personality which influenced my playing. The way I\napproached a piece of music could change drastically with each instrument. The pieces of “Voices of the\nViolin” draw from this experience\, exploring how violin and violinist connect\, and how we work together\nto create one musical voice. \n[…] \nThe new pieces:\nMartijn Padding – 26 Seconds\nSilvia Borzelli – presto continuo\nSamuel Carl Adams – The Last Sound of Venice\nHelena Winkelman – Lady in a Shell (with a bell)\, from Capriccios for solo violin\nKate Moore – E is for Elijah\nMarton Illes – Én-Kör IV\nRobin de Raaff – Encore II\nJan van de Putte – and then my song started dreaming\nJuerg Frey – Wind\, inside the sound\nJasper de Bock – 1001 Stokslagen\nAlice Yeung – Posturizor\nLivia Malossi Bottignole – Hummingbird Pulse\nArieh Chrem – Comfort\, for Joe \nVOICES OF THE VIOLIN

SUMMARY:"Voices for Violin" at November Music
DESCRIPTION:Every violin harbors its own characteristic world of sound. For his project Voices of the Violin\, American-Dutch violinist Joe Puglia delves into the rich world of the violin’s emotions. In recent decades\, Puglia has emerged as a passionate advocate for contemporary music. His repertoire includes works by György Ligeti\, Kate Moore and Luciano Berio. \nFor a violinist\, an instrument of his own that feels right is vital. Some time ago\, Puglia had to return his beloved violin to its owner after nine years. Patiently he searched for a new instrument that touched his musical heart. He tried more than eighty violins and finally found a 1785 violin by Anselmo Bellosio\, owned by the Karel Appel Foundation. More than ever\, Puglia discovered that each violin has its own voice. \nIn honor of the eternal eloquence of this extraordinary instrument\, he commissioned new solo works for violin from various composers. Soloistic delights in which the personality of the violin comes to the fore. For his program Voices of the Violin\, Puglia plays new solo works by very diverse contemporary composers such as Jan van de Putte\, Martijn Padding\, Kate Moore\, Silvia Borzelli\, Robin de Raaff and Helena Winkelman. \n\n\nProgramm\n\n\n\nJan van de Putte\, Martijn Padding\, Kate Moore\, Silvia Borzelli\, Robin de Raaff\, Marton Illes\, Samuel Adams\, Helena Winkelman\, Juerg Frey\, Jasper de Bock\, Livia Malossi\, Alice Yeung e Arieh Chrem \nJoe Puglia – violin

SUMMARY:IL GRANDE MACABRO - mostra multimediale a cura di FontanaMIX e In.Nova Fert
