Ime, Panagulis
for bass clarinet and electronic
About
Alexandros Panagulis was a Greek politician and poet who took an active role in Greece’s fight against the Regime of the Colonels (1967–1974). He became famous for his attempt to assassinate dictator Georgios Papadopoulos on 13 August 1968 and for the torture he was subjected to during his detention, narrated in his fiancee Oriana Fallaci’s book, “Un Uomo” (A man). He was sentenced to death, but as a result of political pressure from the international community, the junta refrained from executing him and instead incarcerated him at the Bogiati (Boyati) Military Prison, called “The Tomb”, near Athens. He refused to cooperate and was subjected to physical and psychological torture. He refused every amnesty offers till August 1973, after four and a half years in jail, when he benefited from a general amnesty that the military regime granted to all political prisoners. Panagulis went into self-exile in Florence, Italy, in order to continue the resistance.
