Un dì si venne a me Malinconia

for string orchestra and narrator

About

“Un dì si venne a me Malinconia” are verses from Dante’s Rhymes LXXII,  to which the piece is inspired and refers both its formal structure and emotional development.

The comparison with Dante’s verses, characterized by a very delicate and heartbreaking lyricism, is expressed through the need to seek  compositional solutions, at the same time new and ancient, which respond with absolute immediacy to the tenor of the composition and which paint effectively (and with an equally elegant combination of intimacy and gravity) the emotional dimension object of the narration.
This urgency of a descriptive and linear coincidence between text and music is based on a psychological analysis of the author’s inner journey, who personally expresses the tortuous attempt to elaborate a mourning. The oscillation between denial, despair, desolation and hope up to the inevitable moment of dramatic awareness is the cornerstone of the emotional quality of the sound image, as well as the key to the entire score, which then unfolds as a search for clarity, of light in continuous instability.
The outcome of this labor, however, is not lucky: with dismay, the poet ends his inner journey in front of an immense black chasm, apex of the sinking.
